Finn Eiles
- My entry into the world of engineering came about by default really. Some friends and I were running a small club night when we were teenagers and we started putting on a couple of bands. But one night the guy that used to be the sound guy failed to turn up, so we were faced with a problem. I decided that it would be a good idea if I did it and, Eureka, my destiny had been set! It was not a very complicated set-up at all - just six mics and a bad pa in a small bar – but I thoroughly enjoyed deafening myself for the cause of entertainment so I carried on doing it for the next few weeks.
All this led to me becoming interested in other sides of music production, and so I began hanging about in a local recording studio. These mythical places seemed even more esoteric when seen first hand - with all the flashing lights, bells and whistles - and it fascinated me how all of these strange boxes and gadgets produced music and beautiful sounds. The process and atmosphere in the studio began to entice me in and I wanted to know more. I therefore decided to enrol on a college course to gain some technical knowledge.
The course I chose was, I now realise, very similar to working in a studio: long hours, sleeping on uncomfortable surfaces and regular trips to 24-hour garages. This made me see what things were really like in the recording industry, but it did not deter me at all. It only added to the excitement of it. So, after successfully completing the course, I began to look for my first job proper in a recording studio, and this is when I stumbled across Nick, the studio manager of Miloco.
I started working as an assistant engineer at Milo studios (as it was then called) learning the ins and outs of studio life and every nook and cranny of its studios. It was during this time that I began assisting for projects with the likes of UNKLE, Blak Twang, Ocean Colour Scene, Suede and producers such as Jim Abbis, Dave Eringa and Simon Raymonde, to name a few.
My first real engineering job came about with the producer Gordon Raphael. He came down to the studio with new bands all the time, but he would rarely bring an engineer with him. So one day I got my chance and I was thrown in at the deep end to record a five-piece band completely live. These sessions really helped me to cut my engineering teeth and I learnt how much of a recording is down to the energy you get a band to transmit onto tape.
My first production was for a band called The Players. They are a modern day ‘supergroup’ made up of an impressive line up of excellent musicians – Steve White, Damon Minchella and Mick Talbot. All performances were done live and in little more than a couple of takes. They were real songs, with authentic production.
Since then I have gone on to record and mix for a variety of new, up and coming bands. This included working with the Test Icicles for James Ford and engineering two of the Mystery Jets singles, again with James. Both of these projects were very rewarding mainly because of the unorthodox approach to recording (and in the case of Test Icicles, their unorthodox approach to everything!).
The first part of 2006 was mainly taken up engineering for Plan B’s debut album, which included mixing and engineering the single ‘Who Needs Actions’. I also mixed the well-received Fionn Regan album with long time collaborator Simon Raymonde, and recorded b-sides for the likes of The Futureheads, Razorlight and Howling Bells.
Most recently I have struck up a new working relationship with DJ Erol Alkan. This has led us to working together on a couple of tracks for the Klaxons and finishing a new EP for the Mystery Jets, and some b-sides for the Long Blondes.
Summer 2006 also saw me move into the production hot seat with a new band called The Bellarosa Connection. We recorded and mixed an EP in The Garden studios that is due for release. It is among the work that I am most proud of and I hope it gains the recognition it deserves.
Towards the end of 2006 saw me return to working with Jim Abbiss on the Jack Penate album. We recorded a few alum tracks and single for his forthcoming album in the fantastis marbled room at Mayfair studios in London.
Another interesting working relationship started last year was with the legendary Kevin Shields. I was asked to engineer for a mix of a track for the Sofia Coppolla film Marie Antoinette which was a great experience. This relationship has since continued to me working on the remixing and remastering of the My Bloody Valentine back analogue. A look back into the past at some of the most incredible guitar music of the last 20 years, it was like being given the keys to the crypt!
Most recently I have been mixing for new band the Underground Heroes and also I had the pleasure of mixing the next Acoustic Ladyland release, an ep, due out in September.
