Pete Hofmann
- I think I was destined to work in the recording industry. I made my first recording on cassette at about 6 years old (it was me singing Bright Eyes!) and, later on, my friends and I would make little recordings on a small set up at home in the spare room. I recorded my friends’ bands on a 4-track which I had persuaded my music teacher to buy for the school on the strict understanding that I would record school carol concerts and the like. I think it stayed in my house for about 5 years before they eventually realised.
After school I decided to take a year out and a friend suggested I did some work at Milo in Hoxton Square. Of course I loved it. I was really into bands and some of the first projects I assisted on included The Charlatans and Mega City 4. All thoughts of going to University went swiftly out the window. I progressed fairly quickly, mainly because of the fact that I worked 18 hour days, 7 days a week, and usually slept on the studio floor or in Liverpool St station, getting the first train home, having a shower, and coming straight back.
My first engineering gig was Tony Hadley. The opportunity came about because the usual engineer couldn’t make it and so there I was in the hot seat. It all went well as far as I remember, and he introduced me to ADT – an effect I’ve been using ever since! A number of important relationships began to develop around this time, the first with producer Phil Vinall.
Phil was without doubt a great inspiration to me and I owe him a lot. He let me get my hands on the board and we had a complimentary working relationship for many years. I first worked with him on The Auteurs album New Wave and then on the Mercury-nominated Now I’m A Cowboy. This was my introduction to my friend and musical collaborator Luke Haines. Phil and I then worked on many of the up and coming Brit poppers. We recorded the revered and very successful Gene debut album, Olympian, which went top 20, along with a string of hit singles from the album. We had been used to being on a tight budget and then, all of a sudden, we were in big studios like Mayfair and The Townhouse! I was only 21 and loved every minute of recording in bigger studios - the great rooms, desk and mics were just fantastic. We also recorded Elastica’s debut Line Up and mixed tracks for the likes of Radiohead, Lick, Shed 7, etc, along with albums like Tiny Monroe’s Volcanoes (which I still like), Libido’s Killing Some Dead Time and many others. Phil really taught me there are no rules to recording. He would often try non-conventional ways to get a good performance – even if they were sonically detrimental – because for him it was all about the performance. Click tracks can be useful, but a song very rarely sounds better than when a band is well rehearsed. He was never afraid of putting the band all together, doing multiple 2 inch recordings and getting the razor blade out.
One of my favourite albums during this period was the Luke Haines project Baader Meinhof. From the start we were trying to do something very different with the production, and the result is a unique record which some people seem to think is one of the most important records of the 90s! Luke then moved on to Black Box Recorder, and I engineered some of their first album.
My first production was the Auteur’s album, How I Learned To Love The Bootboys. We went to Rak to track the album and then mixed it at Milo and I think it’s a great record that still sounds good. All performances were recorded and mixed on tape - probably one of the last albums I made without a lot of digital editing. Around this time I also began producing the second Black Box Recorder album, The Facts Of Life. We had very little budget for this one, to the point where I ended up playing drums on a couple of tracks. We were in really low budget studios begging downtime deals, but we ended up with a really eclectic and fantastic album, which included my first top 20 production, the single The Facts of Life! This album is definitely one of my favourites. The last Black Box Recorder album I produced, Passionoia, is also one I’m proud of. My only regret is that it took so long in coming out.
Since then I have recorded many more albums with Luke: a soundtrack album, Christy Mallory’s Own Double Entry and Das Capital - a re-visiting of all his hits with orchestral arrangements which is one of the most enjoyable albums I’ve been involved with. We have also completed an as-yet-untitled solo album which is due to come out in April 2006 and a recording of Luke’s musical, Property, which he has been writing for the last 5 years. Both see a return to guitar-based music. I can’t wait for these albums to come out as I haven’t had a production out of this kind for a few years now.
The other Phil Vinall band I ended up working with was Grand Drive. I finished the album we had been working on, Road Music, producing the last few tracks myself, and again it was critically acclaimed. The next album was recorded in the same way, and I produced the first track, Ladder To The Stars, but was then unavailable for the rest. So they went off and did it on their own and after trying to mix it twice with some well known producers brought it back to me. True Love And High Adventure is a truly great album - it’s so full of soul, which didn’t always come across on some of the other mixes, but I guess you need to love the music. We then went on to record the track Being Alive, before the usual record company politics and brotherly disputes dictated who they should record with for the next two albums. Regrettably neither of these did particularly well, however Being Alive is now the title track for a rare-and-unreleased album. I have also recently mixed an album for one of the brothers, Danny Wilson, entitled The Famous Mad Mile, which is a beautiful record. I hope to work with Grand Drive again next year because, although it’s sometimes a difficult process, they write such good songs. The success of Grand Drive also led onto me producing the likes of Spearmint’s A Different Lifetime. I think that year I produced four albums in the top 20 Uncut albums of the year!
Whilst working at Milo I became involved in Pussyfoot, a record label which released left field electronic trip hop. I mixed a lot of the material and so got to work closely with the likes of Howie B and Jacknife Lee. I really enjoyed this style of music and it was the beginning of my love for electronic pop. I also recorded Goldfrapp’s maiden release, Contrazoom, which saw the beginning of a long working relationship with Jeremy Shaw on the Naked Funk albums. We went on to co-produce albums for French bands Manta 1000 and The Little White Rabbits, as well as Danish artists Jean and Anna Linnet, and this led to working with Erland Oy (Kings of Convenience/Royksopp), mixing his electronic debut, Unrest, and DJ Zinc on his album Faster.
It was while exploring the pop market via bands like S Club 7 that Virgin introduced me to Richard X. He was looking for someone to help with vocal production and mixing. He was into Black Box Recorder and so we got on really well and have since had huge success with the likes of Liberty X, Kelis, Javine and P.Diddy. We have also collaborated on: the critically acclaimed debut from Annie, Anniemal, which had another top 20 single; tracks from the excellent MIA album, Arular; as well as Rachel Stevens, with the critically and commercially successful Number 2 hit Some Boys and the album track Crazy Boys. This is the marriage of pop and electronica that I am most comfortable with. In addition to all these we have also produced remixes for New Order, Depeche Mode, Ciara, TLC, Nine Inch Nails, The Bravery and Gwen Stefani.
Another long-standing relationship is with Steve Hillage, veteran producer and artist (Gong/System 7), who I worked with between 1992 and 2002 as a traditional engineer. During this time we produced a lot of world music, such as Rachid Taha’s albums Diwan and Made In Medina - which we recorded in New Orleans and Marakech and that went on to win the French equivalent of a Mercury. We also worked with Rai legend Khaled on the album Kenza which involved recording orchestras in Egypt, and then the two of them together with a third artist, Faudel, on the live project 123 Soleils, which took about 6 months to complete and went on to become a multi-platinum double album!
Finally, no summary would be complete without mentioning my relationship with hip hop/pop producer and friend Lucas Secon, who I first worked with in 1992. We have since worked with hip hop artists like Mos Def (Miss Fat Booty) and Tweet (Smoking Cigarettes), as well as Usher and more recently Liberty X, Keisha White and rap/rock/pop group Outlandish. This grounding in urban music has also helped me work with people like Miss Dynamite, Terri Walker and most recently hot new signing Pixie on Island Def Jam.

- The Suzukis are hard hitting, must have the volume on dangerously high sort of band, which the band provide perfect evidence in the shape of the title track Reducer. They just fly in with banging guitar riffs from the start followed by Chris Veasey bellowing out the lyrics not too dissimilar to the man himself Ozzy Osborne (Early Black Sabbath days). This track just spreads energy from it; you can't listen to this and stand or even sit still. Some part of you will voluntarily or involuntarily move to beat, Reducer is like Paul McKenna hypnotising you.
The trend continues on with Built In, with the guitars somehow sounding louder and changing in so many directions it would leave you suffering from motion sickness. Stuart Robison must look like he has been thrown into the shower after this track because he really is going to town on the drums. There would be no surprise at all to find out that he had a supply of drumsticks with him during this.
Headset leads into a cross between a Foo Fighters meet Oasis, with spiralling lyrics and one minute all out rocking to the next slowing it all down, but maintaining the intensity to it. The finish is quite simply feedback followed by noise, noise, and even more noise.
These guys are certainly looking to put themselves on the map and Wigan again since The Verve was around. Could The Suzukis be the next best thing to come from Wigan since The Verve, or could they be even bigger?? Who knows there could be a head to head with The Verve reuniting?

- Peter Parrish (Stylus)
- Luke Haines shares a degree of commonality with the comedian Chris Morris. He, like Haines, is often characterized by darker material and has openly rejected contemporary media games. This conception is presumably based upon the disquieting Jam series and the airing of a one-off Brass Eye (the savagely accurate parody of investigative documentary reporting) that controversially focused on paedophilia. With Haines, the reputation stems from his acerbic portraits of life and an apparent taste for the unpleasant. At first glance, an album which runs the thematic gambit of serial killers, child molesters, and notorious racists isn’t going to change that a great deal.
Yet both men are done a grave disservice by their shorthand biographies. Morris enjoyed a radio career which delighted in mischievous glee and he carried an obvious sense of the absurd into the news-pillorying The Day Today, as well as providing a madcap turn as a crazed boss in the otherwise terrible “The IT Crowd.? This is conveniently forgotten by those who hope to maintain his status as an overlord of “dark? comedy. Likewise, Mr. Haines brings much more to his work than bad taste and squalor. For a start, he’s a funny guy. For a finish, he has pop sensibilities up the wazoo.
This much will already be known to devotees of his varied career—one that has stretched from Auteurs frontman to Black Box Recorder lyricist via a side-project about German terrorism to, finally, solo albums released under his own name. From the opening Euro-Disco beats of the title track to the brain-infiltrating “Can you feel the beat of my heart?? refrain, it’s clear that Haines hasn’t lost his ear for a hook. Nor has his taste for the obscure been dampened, as precisely what point (if any) the words are making seems to be buried fairly deep. It could simply be an extension of a previous bullet to the art world head, “The Death of Sarah Lucas?—but a little reference-digging reveals a mention of “Die Fahne Hoch,? the anthem of National Socialism. So perhaps it’s about Austria’s most infamous failed artist instead. Or maybe he thinks certain modern artists are worse than Nazis. Read into it what you will.
The comely twin sisters of catchy tunes and knowledge-testing snippets continue to skip gaily through the album park, hand in hand. Unbeknownst to these helpless metaphors, they are being constantly watched by a stained raincoat ... inhabited by a loveable stand-up comic. It’s a pretty screwed-up vibe. Take “Leeds United,? a song that unites 1970s Britain, football, the Yorkshire Ripper, and novelist David Peace (whose books also provide a link between those topics). It’s a marvellously observed pastiche of novelty football records, right down to the “crowd roar? pre-chorus and verses decorated with “sick as a parrot? cliché, given a glam-stomp coating and a twist ending about a notorious serial killer. By various degrees it can delight, confuse, offend, and educate. Crucially, when it’s through doing that, there remains a fine piece of music.
Others don’t quite manage to deliver their punchline. Returning to the opening parallels for a moment, the flawlessness of early Chris Morris works led to a touch of the Emperor’s New Clothes. After much soul-searching and pondering about the true meaning or targets of “Nathan Barley,? most concluded that it simply wasn’t funny. Yet for a while it earned a stay of execution. This was a Morris project, it must have hidden depths. He couldn’t simply be coasting, could he?
There is the danger of a similar effect occurring with the lesser lights of Off My Rocker. After much deliberation, including the possibility that it was a subtle dig at the Kaiser Chiefs, the realization dawned that “Fighting in the City? just isn’t that great. A plodding, mid-tempo tale of the kind of drunken violence that crops up in cities across our fair nation—it holds up a mirror to society, but reveals little. Likewise, the suitably Eastern mysticism-ified strains of “Secret Yoga? don’t really succeed as anything other than filler.
Elsewhere, however, the emperor is still resplendent in his finery. “Here’s to Old England? may starkly highlight his latest predilection for cramming as many different references into a single track. Po-faced national mourning, enforced patriotism, double-standards, and xenophobia all get a look in—as do innumerable other shameful aspects of Englishness. On much the same theme, “All the English Devils? adopts a Charleston vibe and delivers bon mots about bouncing bombs. Clean, bright production helps to ensure that the payload is as large as possible.
Whether dwelling on the demise of tragic boxer Freddie Mills or spitting out sarcastic jibes about the former hunting ground of Jonathan King, Luke Haines can be relied upon to deliver unpleasantness in a bleakly comic fashion. The odd misstep notwithstanding, Off My Rocker at the Art School Bop casts a withering gaze across the unpalatable dregs of life and undermines their power to shock and offend with the deft application of twisted absurdity and wit. Not to mention a hummable chorus. All together now; “Gary Glitter / Is a bad bad man / Ruining the reputation of the Glitter Band.? Just because it’s serious, doesn’t mean it can’t be funny.

- If your cynicism kicks into overdrive the minute you hear the words 'the new Arcade Fire' then switch it off for the moment. For Fields do bear undeniable musical comparisons to last year's Canadian word of mouth sensations. What's more, they're good. Really bloody good.
Song For The Fields is, rather astonishingly, the band's debut single. It's astonishing because it's shot through with a confidence and sense of purpose that bands twice as old would kill for. It's got a quiet, folky intro which slow burns gorgeously until the drums eventually kick in, and an insistent chorus of "you're not the only one" rattles around your brain. Gorgeous harmonies and a dark yet commercial pop sensibility all combine to make this one of the best singles of the year so far.
With support slots with the likes of Snow Patrol lined up, Fields are set to become of the hippest names to drop this year. Buy this now before everyone jumps on the bandwagon.

- Today’s music doesn’t interest me. Most of it is about sex and drugs, which is too superficial. You can sing about those things once in a while if you really feel the urge, but our media is being blasted with music that makes no sense and is both hollow and shallow.
But I have found the music of my life.
Lenny from Cuba, Isam from Morocco, and Waqas from Pakistan make up Outlandish. Their music is outstanding, their style is mixed, with a bit of soul, a bit of rap, a bit of R&B, a bit of jazz and lots of thought. They sing about the beauty of life, the troubles that await whenever we step outside our door, and the hatred that roams this world, among other things. Their lyrics get your brain working, their voices get your ears wanting more and their music gets your body to either sit and relax or get on your bed and jump.
Their latest CD, “Closer than Veins,? has blown me away. Not only do the lyrics get me thinking, their combined voices provide me with the greatest fulfillment. Whenever I’m down, I put on this CD and my soul receives peace, knowing that there are others out there who share the same thoughts and worries.
Tracks like “Callin’ U,? “Any Given Time,? “Una Palabra? and “I Only Ask of God? are so fantastic that I can never get enough. One of their major hits, “Look Into My Eyes,? focuses on the war in the Middle East from the perspective of a child.
Outlandish is a perfect example of what music should be. Music is not all about getting the most chicks, being with the most guys, and shaking it in the club. Music is a voice that needs to be heard. Music brings a message that should be heeded. It not only entertains but educates. The music of Outlandish does exactly that. It makes sure to get its message out without making you fall asleep from boredom.
If you plan to buy one CD soon, make it “Closer Than Veins.? It’s worth it.

- Some time ago, maybe on this very page I told a story about going to see Grand Drive at the soon-to-disappear Garage on Highbury Corner in dear old London town and declaring to an old cohort that they were "the best damn band in Britain." I shouldn't really go in for pitching one band against all the others but I still have a tremendous fondness for the sterling work of the core of the band namely Ed Balch, Julian Wilson and Danny George Wilson. I'm not sure of the middle names of the other two but Danny proudly uses his on this splendid solo LP. Maybe it's to prevent him getting mixed up with the band that brought us "Mary's Prayer".
- Though The Famous Mad Mile revolves around Danny's distinctive voice and guitar playing there are some lovely extra touches provided by guest musicians including New York singer songwriter Jess Klein on harmony vocals and some fantastic violin playing by Josh Hillman
- The title track is a classic example of what makes D G Wilson such a fine songwriter. He manages to use a battered old car as the trigger for a delightfully wistful tune about times long gone and he does it without ever sounding remotely cheesy. One of his heroes - Bruce Springsteen - would be justly proud of such an effort.
- That's just one of many excellent songs on this record which is beautifully produced with a lightness of touch by Simon Alpin. It sounds like an LP made at leisure with friends in warm, relaxing surroundings. If that's an accurate description of Alpin's front room, then I'm spot-on. Fans of Grand Drive will be delighted to discover that one of the many highlights on the record is a co-composition with Julian Wilson. If I knew his middle name, I'd tell you.

- This is one of the greatest albums Ive had the pleasure to record and mix . It was the time I met Richard X and was great fun from start to finish. My favourite mixes are the tracks Finest Dreams ft Kelis and Being Nobody ft Liberty X
- www.blackmelody.com
- This is one of my favourite albums ever ....finest dreams has to be 1 of the best songs ever to grace the airwaves
- His source material is overly kitsch: consumed by a passion for 1980s' electropop, he exhumes Spandau Ballet's Chant No 1, minor Human League bits and Deborah Evans, the icy toff from the long-defunct Flying Lizards. The result, though, is a very superior brand of froth.

Richard X
- Virgin introduced me to Richard X when he was looking for someone to help with vocal production and mixing. He was into Black Box Recorder and so we got on really well and have since had huge success with the likes of Liberty X, Kelis, Javine and P.Diddy. We have also collaborated on: the critically acclaimed debut from Annie, Anniemal (which included a top 20 single); tracks from the excellent MIA album, Arular; as well as Rachel Stevens, with the critically and commercially successful Number 2 hit Some Boys and the album track Crazy Boys. It’s this marriage of pop and electronica that I am most comfortable with. In addition to all these we have also produced remixes for New Order, Depeche Mode, Ciara, TLC, Nine Inch Nails, The Bravery and Gwen Stefani.

- I mixed this album with Erlend who had been around the world working with some of the best producers in electronic music putting down ideas. I then brought the project together, tidying up the tracks and re recording his vocals on what is a beautifully dark electronic soundscape....

- Q Magazine
- Unrest follows a clean electronic trajectory, which manages to project both urban complexity and domestic quiet, while Oye's free-associative lyrics meander amiably here, there and nowhere.

Luke Haines
- I met Luke Haines through the early Auteurs projects with Phil Vinal, and it was the beginning of a wonderful friendship… Our working relationship has gone on to include numerous albums by Luke including the Auteurs, Baader Meinhof, Black Box Recorder and several albums released under his own name.
Baader Meinhof is viewed by some as one of the most important records of the 90s, whilst our work on Black Box Recorder led to my first top 20 single, The Facts of Life. Indeed, my first album production was the Auteur’s How I Learned To Love The Bootboys, and since then I have recorded many more records with Luke, including a soundtrack album, Christy Mallory’s Own Double Entry and Das Capital - a re-visiting of all his hits with orchestral arrangements. We have also completed a new solo album and a recording of Luke’s musical, Property.

Das Capital (Album), Luke Haines
- Co-Prod
- Virgin Records
- www.lukehaines.co.uk
- John Mulvey
- As an exercise in self-aggrandisement, both literal and ironic, Das Capital works brilliantly: Haines even contributes fulsome reviews of his back catalogue in the sleevenotes. Three new songs (notably "The Mitford Sisters") also suggest there's plenty of bad blood left in him yet. But the greatness of The Auteurs, and the reason why they were always superior to Haines's "pop" project Black Box Recorder, is that his songs are best suited to spindly, arthritic accompaniments: guitar, bass, drums, a distant creak of cello. Ultimately, Das Capital is a grandiose satire, an opulent folly, and an album whose primary use is to remind us of the excellence found on the original records by this most callous observer of English idiocies.
- Luke Haines is one of the most respected British songsmiths of the last 15 years, so it's good to have this retrospective detailing the best of his work with The Auteurs, Black Box Recorder, Baader Meinhof and, of course, Haines himself. In a neat twist to the tired "best of" format there are three extra tracks and the album has been re-recorded in wide screen orchestral arrangements.

- A delicious, genre-defying sound
- Q
- Simultaneously lovely and repellent, there's echoes of the Pet Shop Boys, Pink Floyd and Momus. But, in truth, their combination of the sinister and the delicious is entirely original.
- Andrew Mueller (amazon)
- The Facts of Life has located an edge of taunting viciousness all the more diabolical for being so understated. The tunes, as ever, are sweet and insidious, perhaps best thought of as Saint Etienne turned feral. Highlights on an album full of them are "English Motorway" and "The Art of Driving"--BBR triumphantly reclaiming the American rock & roll prerogative of the road song for their damp, claustrophobic homeland. The Facts of Life is a masterpiece.
- NME
- Multi-personality pop auteur Luke Haines continues his bid to become the South's answer to Jarvis with this bittersweet, lightly nostalgic, defiantly English snapshot of adolescent growing pains in crap small towns. A chunky lo-fi electro-pop trailer for BBR's imminent second semi-concept album, 'The Facts Of Life' intercuts Sarah Nixey's blank-voiced explanation of the effects of puberty with teasing hints of first love in the school playground. By 'Soul Boy' the flirtation has blossomed into a full-blown romance, but in 'Start As We Mean To Go On' the marriage is on the rocks and bitter disappointment has set in: "cut our losses, screw our bosses". Haines is an evil genius, and painfully accurate social observation doesn't get more catchy than this outside Jarvisworld.
True Love and High Adventure (Album), Grand Drive

- That True Love and High Adventure is a gorgeous album which invokes a feeling of sunny nostalgia and sweeping grandeur is a cause for celebration. That this spectacular example of Americana is the product of a band from South London is a cause for wonder. On their second release, Grand Drive have perfectly captured the wide-open expansiveness that is characteristic of this particularly American form of music. Their sound is pitched somewhere between Mercury Rev and The Byrds, as the bright harmonies of brothers Danny and Julian Wilson blend over lush orchestral arrangements. The organ that opens "Wheels" gives way to understated string arrangements punctuated by plaintive harmonica, while shuffling drums provide a backdrop to the mandolin, guitar and organ that flesh out "A Ladder To The Stars", which--along with the sprightly title track--provides the album's highlight. Elsewhere, brass, piano, flute and piccolo add to the mix without ever overtaking it, indicative of the album's skilfully restrained production. Their debut album, Road Music, was released to near-universal critical acclaim, and True Love and High Adventure is even better. Grand Drive prove that the best Americana is no longer the exclusive domain of the Americans.
- This album is just class from start to finish and it has the best harmonies i have ever heard, particularly on "My best side". You can hear a touch of The Byrds as well as The Jayhawks and the first time i listened to it i had no idea these were from london as the voices are like true californians. Ladder to the Stars is the best song in my view. Classic album!!!!!!

- This CD documents an epochal 1998 performance by three Algerian singer-composers. Khaled is the undisputed king of rai, a rebellious, Western-influenced style spawned in the port city of Oran. As he was in constant danger from outraged Muslim fundamentalists, he fled to Paris. Later on, Rachid Taha formed a rock band called Carte de Sejour (Green Card), which addressed the concerns of downtrodden immigrant populations in France. Last but not least, the talented newcomer Faudel is often referred to as Khaled's heir-apparent. The 13 tracks include such monster hits as "Didi", "N'ssi N'ssi" and "Chebba" plus "Aicha", a bit of ear-candy by Jean-Jacques Goldman, plus the French pop chestnut, "Comme D'Habitude". It is easily one of the best-engineered live recordings ever made, capturing the empathy shared by the singers and a wildly enthusiastic audience and providing an indelible sense of time and place.

- Drawing inspiration from sick and sensational headlines is nothing new in underground rock: In his influential mid-'80s group Big Black, Steve Albini delivered provocative ditties about a child sex ring in rural Minnesota and kids who were hooked on torching things with kerosene. But with his first release outside the Auteurs, Luke Haines tries to push things even farther. He takes the name of a notorious early '70s German terrorist group; uses the members' mug shots as album art, and crafts a conceptual effort based on the inner musings of sinister souls ranging from the sadistic rebels in Mogadishu to the legendary hit man Carlos "the Jackal" Ramirez. I know what you're thinking: "Yawn. If I want shock rock, I'll listen to Marilyn Manson." But like Nick Cave's Murder Ballads, Baader Meinhof succeeds because Haines is a very literate pervert. "Christ was an extremist/With a kamikaze soul/Happy birthday, Anna/You're 29 years old," he sings in "Mogadishu," effectively capturing the mix of political fervor and messianic delusion that can cause a normal middle-class kid to start playing with Uzis and plastic explosives. Haines may be a creep, but he can certainly turn a phrase. What's more, the music matches the lyrical sophistication. Two drummers create a loose, clattering foundation of herky-jerk percussion; a violinist saws away in an understated, melancholic way, and the moody minor-key melodies sound as if they've been sampled from a futuristic funeral parlor. Through it all wafts Haines' surprisingly chipper and tuneful vocals, and they somehow turn these unlikely ingredients into strong pop hooks. You'll never have more fun singing along with a more despicable group of people.
