Joe Hirst
- My Interest in music started at an early age, I persuaded my parents to let me take up the violin at school and soon progressed to the viola and eventually onto the guitar and bass. My curiosity in recording began when at age eight I worked out how to record myself practicing scales so I could repeat the tape and avoid the dreaded slog. Technology and computers were always another keen interest of mine and soon combined with my love of music the inevitable fascination with recording studios took hold. After recording a demo with my first band, I began avidly reading Sound on Sound and eventually graduated to having a small setup at home. With my trusty Cubase PC I recorded anyone who was interested and I did loads of recording with my band at home including drums in the dining room!
My engineering education continued at LIPA (Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts) whilst studying for a degree in Sound Technology. I finally got to see a proper recording studio and a Pro Tools system and instantly knew it was where I wanted to spend most of my time. LIPA gave me great access to the facilities and encouraged everyone to use the studios as much as possible. I took full advantage of this and gained loads of experience recording lots of different music. During my time in Liverpool I also managed to play in a couple of bands who gigged regularly, while also working freelance at several local studios where I recorded a few singles and albums including, Morning Runner "Great Escapes/Oceans" 7", Proud Mary "Love and Light" album and My Architects, "She Knew/Another Reason to Go"
Although the North of England is my home and has greatly influenced my musical education I soon realised the lonely streets of London were where I needed to be. After this momentous decision I landed a job at Miloco Studios and started work within the month. My first session as an assistant was with Roll Deep, I ended up doing some engineering for them during the session and have continued working with them on and off ever since and I am currently helping them put together a little studio of their own. Other engineering and programming work soon followed including a 6 week stint with Beth Gibbons on a French film soundtrack, "L'Annulaire" with the legendary Phill Brown engineering and mixing and myself programming.
For the past three years I have worked with loads of great producers/engineers and artists including Bloc Party, DJ Shadow, Jarvis Cocker, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, The Futureheads and Beth Gibbons. As an assistant I have gained a great deal of experience through working with people such as Dave Eringa, Ben Hillier, Steve Dub, Colin Richardson, Phill Brown and Paul Epworth. All of these people have influenced my approach to engineering and producing in different ways and have provided an invaluable education in making music and hopefully made me a valuable and versatile addition to any team.
Assisting on sessions is a great way to meet people and progress onto engineering, after helping out with Bloc Party on their first album I managed to engineer around twenty demos for their new record and also went on to record and mix two b-sides, acoustic versions of "Plans" and "Storm and Stress". I assisted on several Howie B sessions in 2004 and then started programming and engineering with Howie on various projects, including a recently completed album for V2 with an Italian band, "Casino Royale" , the album was recorded in Milan and mixed at Miloco 4 (The Garden). I have definitely worked on an eclectic range of sessions so far including recording the music for several episodes of the BBC drama, "Most Mysterious Murders" , TV music sessions are certainly not for the faint hearted and provided a great challenge with over eighty cues recorded in one day!
I enjoy recording acoustic music and recently had an amazing experience recording in Abbey Road Studio 2 with Faroese artist Lena Anderson. The session included a live recording of a track featuring harp, vibes, double bass, cello, guitar and vocal.
I have maintained a good working relationship with my old band, "Terra Alpha" who were originally involved in the "dining room sessions". I have been producing tracks with them and other unsigned bands, developing skills other than engineering with a view to help expand the groups and get more experience of production in general. Hopefully I will have more time in the future to devote to collaborating with other producers and doing some more remixes. My varied music tastes take in everything from indie, jazz, soul, funk, hip hop, drum and bass and grime, and this passion for all musical genres drives my desire to be an engineer and producer and to simply make really great music
- Recording Engineer and Programmer
- Joe’s devotion to both new technology and vintage studio gear is earning him a rapidly growing reputation. His comprehension of vintage microphones is hard to better, and with a vast musical awareness and enthusiasm for every project, it's understandable how he already has countless engineering credits, including Jarvis Cocker, Roll Deep and DJ Shadow.
Howie B
- I have worked with Howie on and off for over two years now, projects have included a 25min piece of music for a fashion show, several remixes and edits, TV adverts, and EP for Italian band ‘Ego’ and an album for another Italian band, ‘Casino Royale’. Generally my role has involved programming and engineering with a little percussion playing thrown in for good measure. Successful working relationships are always dependent on personality and understanding, musically we share a great deal of common ground and enthusiasm and always manage to create a good vibe in the studio. On more recent projects we have undertaken I looked after the recording side of things allowing Howie to concentrate fully on producing. This has worked out great for both of us as I can focus on the technical details whilst Howie can solely concentrate on performances and arrangements etc. There is never a dull moment in the studio with Howie and hopefully we will continue working together on many future projects.
Roll Deep
- My first session as an assistant in London was with Roll Deep and I soon started engineering for them on various projects including the Creeper series of mixtapes, Grimey Vol. 1 and Wiley’s, “Da 2nd Phase? Album. Recently I have mixed their new critically acclaimed mixtape, "Rules and Regulations Vol 1" and worked on some of Wiley's new material for his forthcoming album on Big Dada, "Playtime is Over" Grime was a totally new thing for me when I started working on it and it certainly opened my eyes and got me excited. I’m partial to healthy doses of drum and bass, dub and hip-hop and Roll Deep’s music seemed to incorporate all these elements. This understanding and enthusiasm served me well and allowed me get along with everyone and get the results they were after. They also find a great deal of amusement in my accent which is odd because I think the same about them! Along with working on their music I've helped them build their own studio and even find time to do some fishing with beats master Danny Weed!!!

- Mixed this track for Dobie at Musicbox. Yes it is an official Shirley Bassey release with her singing the Linonel Richie classic, "Hello" remixed by the top beats man Dobie. Apparently she was quite emotional when she first it! Anyhow am very pleased with the mix and more importantly my Mum is very proud!

EP, The English Channel
- Mix/Eng
- Unsigned
- The English Channel was born and raised in Greater Manchester and now lives in London, England. He makes music by programming stuff on his (not so) trusty old Roland 505 and then singing over the top. Sometimes he plays the melodica and harmonica as well. Using just one or two chords (“..it’s not laziness, it just forces me to be more imaginative with my voice) his songs possess a cyclical, hypnotic quality more associated with dance music than traditional pop and rock. People say he sings like Barny Sumner or S.W Ryder, (“I’m from round that way so that’s just how it comes out), unafraid to use the odd bit of Lancashire dialect to scuff-up the digital sheen of the music. Sonically he is attempting to create EnglishChannelMusik, a multiple-personality disorder of acid-house, prog-rock, digital-dub, European electro, and avant-dreampop. He’ll tell you he likes listening to music by Arthur Russell, Neu!, Marshall Jefferson, Battles, and Steve Reich; but he also enjoys The Move. This explains both his pop-savvy melodies and the fact that some songs are a bit long.

- Music Week
- The English Channel - Forty Days and Forty Nights
A heady mix of Roland 505 house and European electro, this Andy Weatherall/Shaun Ryder inspired track captures the spirit of Screamadelica with the clarity of New Order. Unafraid to use the odd bit of Lanchashire dialect to scruff up the vocals, this offering encapsulates The English Channel's cocky approach to songwriting, which is starting to win him critical acclaim.

- Firstly 'Rules...' is a 'street record' -a mixtape of dark rhymes and coarse beats, so don't expect any more ghetto disco like previous single 'The Avenue'. No, this is dark, serious and all the better for it. Roll Deep's radar sometimes veers wildly off course when they attempt to go pop, and it's no wonder - it's the equivalent of Gallows trying to record a chart topper. Freed from any affected pop sensibility, the crew are transparently feeling a new lease of life. In fact, they're enjoying it so much they've packed 18 tracks on to this over-burdened disc. Never mind, when they're as brilliantly formed as the story-telling 'Bad Man', as celestial as the synth monster of 'Respect Us', or such an odd mix of retro-electro and heavyweight MCing as 'Do This Ting', who cares? Alongside Klashnekoff and Dizzee, Roll Deep are redesigning British rap, incorporating conscious, social concerns into hard-edged street frames. Essential.

- Independent
- Despite having sold 75,000 copies of their debut album, hip-hop collective Roll Deep were dropped by their former label, Relentless, who claimed they wanted to focus more on K T Tunstall. The label may also have been influenced by the culture of fear that makes some promoters reluctant to stage grime shows. It's ironic, then, that the group's second album is one of hip-hop's most moralistic accounts of modern urban life, an articulate and thoughtful demolition of the armed outlaw myths infecting black youth culture. "You can be a bad man without a revolver," they tell kids lured by gangsta glamour, while in "Do This Ting", they sketch a grim portrait of love in a time of bad reputations. On "Respect Us", they even advise youths to stay in school and respect their teachers! But it's not all good advice: there's the usual complement of bigging-up, braggadocio and threatening behaviour - but no sexism, interestingly - and several skeletal, brutally infectious grime party grooves, cunningly created from minimal soundtrack phrases and, on "Celebrate", a lovely creaking African bowed-string loop. Rap album of the year?

- SNAP OF THE DAY: MICACHU
- Well versed in making delightfully simple synth-pop, Micachu is about as
East London as it gets, from her appearance on Man Like Me's comical
marching band ode to British weather (helpfully named 'British Weather',
which, incidentally, sounds like a modern day Madness) to her fluoro-tinted
MySpace design and, erm, use of a hoover as part of her live set (this,
admittedly, doesn't fit any stereotype). Already racking up support from His
Holiness Rob da Bank, she's sounding best on 'Golden Phone', a lazy pop song
in the sense that it creeps up on you in the most unsuspecting ways, void of
a chorus in the traditional sense yet still full of enough pop satire to
engage the listener throughout. Playing extensively across the South East of
England over the next few months, her MySpace page will give you a taster of
what she's about.

- Strange Fruit
- Recored and mixed another film soundtrack with Beth Gibbons (Portishead) for the forthcoming French film, "Baby Blues" directed by Diane Bertrand. Working with Beth is always great as she challenges me to go against some of my instinctual working methods and always try new things. As well as being an amazing singer she writes and performs beautiful music and this last project was no exception. During the mixing of this I got first hand experience in working in 5.1 and generally broadened my understanding of music for film.
